OpenAI Rolls Out ChatGPT Astra to $20 Plus Subscribers

OpenAI has commenced the gradual rollout of its flagship AI model, ChatGPT Astra, to subscribers using the $20 Plus tier, bringing advanced capabilities directly to paid consumer accounts.

The new flagship release is appearing progressively across user accounts, with the deployment initially surfacing inside the ChatGPT Work interface rather than the standard Chat model picker. Subscribers who cannot immediately locate the new model under their standard dropdown menus are advised to navigate directly to the Work section to confirm availability.

According to official statements from OpenAI, the model integration is included within the boundaries of existing subscription limits, meaning Plus members are not required to purchase a separate plan or upgrade tier to leverage the technology. For individuals requiring extended operations beyond standard plan parameters, additional usage credits will be made available for purchase.

OpenAI officially confirmed the distribution schedule through a public advisory on X, stating, “GPT-6 Astra is now available to all Pro, Enterprise, and Business Premium users in ChatGPT Work and Codex. It’s also live in the API.” The company added that the broader distribution across remaining consumer tiers “might take a few days to roll out to our Plus and Business users.”

Designed as a comprehensive solution for enterprise-grade demands, ChatGPT Astra features enhanced capabilities tailored for computer operation, advanced web browsing, software coding, scientific computation, cybersecurity analysis, and extended professional workflows. OpenAI representatives note that Astra significantly outperforms its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Sol, in maintaining strict contextual continuity throughout complex, multi-step tasks.

While paying subscribers gain access to the new architecture, OpenAI has not yet clarified whether ChatGPT Astra will eventually become accessible to free users, or what specific limitations might apply if a free tier is introduced. For the time being, free-tier accounts remain restricted to older iterations, including GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.
