As enterprise reliance on autonomous AI agents grows, the challenge of maintaining governance and provenance beyond organizational perimeters has become a critical bottleneck. Addressing this gap, Identity Digital Inc. has spun off its internal initiative, Innovation Labs, into an independent entity dubbed Known Systems AI Inc. The move is designed to accelerate the development and adoption of a standardized, cross-platform framework for AI agent accountability.
At the core of the new company’s mission is the DNSid framework, a technology previously incubated within Identity Digital. DNSid functions as a digital “birth certificate” for AI agents, providing a persistent, verifiable identity that connects an agent directly to its parent organization. By leveraging Domain Name System (DNS) infrastructure, public key infrastructure (PKI), and immutable blockchain ledgers, the framework ensures that an agent’s identity remains cryptographically bound, regardless of the platform or environment in which it operates.
### The Shift Toward Cross-Organizational Accountability
Current Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions have long served as the gatekeepers for enterprise environments. However, these tools are primarily designed to govern human users or internal processes within a specific ecosystem. They often falter when tasked with managing the increasingly complex, agent-to-agent interactions that define modern AI-driven workflows. As agents begin to autonomously initiate financial transactions, perform data exfiltration, or execute logic across third-party platforms, the ability to assign definitive ownership becomes a significant security and compliance hurdle.
“AI agents will not scale without accountability,” said Allie Kline, partner at Ethos Capital and interim CEO of Known Systems AI. “As agents begin transacting, exchanging information and operating across organizational boundaries, accountability requires a consistent way to know who is responsible for them. That is essential to building the trust required for broader adoption.”
### Breaking Out for Industry Neutrality
Identity Digital’s decision to transition the initiative into a standalone company was driven by the necessity for market neutrality. According to Akram Atallah, CEO of Identity Digital, keeping the development internal would have constrained the framework’s potential to become an industry-wide standard. By separating the entity, Known Systems AI can now pursue broader collaboration without the perceived bias of being tied to a single registrar company.
While independent, the startup will maintain strategic alignment with its former parent. Identity Digital will remain a lead investor and retain a seat on the board of directors, with further support provided by Ethos Capital.
### Establishing a Global Standard
Known Systems AI is not merely building a proprietary tool; it is aiming to codify an open standard for agent identification. To this end, the company has already submitted an Internet-Draft to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Furthermore, it is deepening its involvement with the open-source community through active participation in the Linux Foundation, specifically via the Agentic AI Foundation and LF Decentralized Trust.
For enterprise IT leaders, the emergence of a standardized accountability layer is a welcome development. As organizations scale from a handful of experimental bots to thousands of active agents performing mission-critical tasks, the ability to trace actions back to a verifiable source—without requiring exhaustive bilateral trust agreements between every single counterparty—is expected to become a cornerstone of the next wave of agentic AI deployments. With established ties to both U.S. policymakers and early enterprise adopters, Known Systems AI is positioning itself to be the critical infrastructure provider in an era where AI autonomy is the new status quo.
