Hyperscale Demand Accelerates Q1 Financial Growth
Western Digital delivered financial results for its first quarter of fiscal 2027 that exceeded forecasts, driven by sustained demand from hyperscale cloud operators and enterprise customers expanding infrastructure for artificial intelligence workloads. Revenue reached $4.38 billion, marking a 55 percent year-over-year increase and beating company guidance of $4.1 billion. Net profit under GAAP reached $1.8 billion, representing a 50.5 percent increase compared to the same quarter last year.
While GAAP net profit moderated relative to the previous quarter’s $3.2 billion—a total boosted by a $1.7 billion non-operating gain linked to SanDisk assets—core operational indicators showed notable strength. Non-GAAP gross margin, revenue, and earnings per share all topped the high end of executive guidance. Gross margin expanded to 57.8 percent from 50.2 percent in the previous quarter, while operating cash flow reached $1.6 billion and free cash flow rose to $1.4 billion.
Cloud Segment Dominates Drive Capacity Shipments
The financial performance underscores the company’s reliance on cloud architecture and hyperscale infrastructure spending. The cloud business segment generated 88 percent of overall revenue, with client drives accounting for 7 percent and consumer storage delivering the remaining 5 percent. Mass-capacity nearline hard disk drives (HDDs) accounted for 90 percent of all shipped drive units.
Total capacity shipped reached 248 exabytes, up 21.6 percent year-over-year from 231 exabytes in the preceding quarter. Revenue per exabyte shipped rose to $17.7 million, representing an 8.8 percent sequential gain and a 28 percent increase year-over-year. Chief Financial Officer Kris Sennesael noted that improved volume, positive pricing dynamics, and a portfolio shift toward higher-capacity nearline drives continue to drive operating gains while lowering customer total cost of ownership through higher rack density.
ePMR Ramp and HAMR Commercialization Roadmap
To meet rising hyperscale density requirements, Western Digital is accelerating production transitions across energy-assisted perpendicular magnetic recording (ePMR) and heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) platforms.
The company is ramping manufacturing of its next-generation ePMR drives, bringing single-drive capacities to the 40 TB threshold. Chief Executive Officer Irving Tan stated that 40 TB ePMR drives are projected to represent nearly 30 percent of nearline drive shipments by the second quarter of fiscal 2027, growing to 50 percent by the third quarter.
In parallel, qualification processes for first-generation 44 TB HAMR drives remain on schedule. Western Digital plans to finish qualifications with two hyperscale cloud customers in the first quarter of calendar year 2027, with volume manufacturing scheduled for the first half of calendar 2027. Qualifications with two additional customers are scheduled to start during that same timeframe. Tan noted that initial customer feedback highlights lower drive failure rates compared to existing market alternatives.
Looking ahead, Western Digital plans to begin qualification testing for its second-generation HAMR platform in the second half of calendar year 2027. Built on an 11-disk architecture utilizing 5 TB per platter, the second-generation platform will target 55 TB per drive.
Targeting AI Inferencing and Expanding Customer Horizons
In addition to traditional bulk storage applications, Western Digital is working to position high-capacity hard drives in performance-oriented workload tiers. The company is sampling high-bandwidth drive designs featuring dual-pivot technology. The high-throughput architecture targets workloads such as video streaming and key-value (KV) caching in AI inferencing—a space currently dominated by NVMe solid-state drives.
Tan noted that demand is broadening beyond established hyperscalers to include specialized neocloud providers and AI frontier labs. Order visibility across the company’s top seven customers now extends out to 2030 and 2031, signaling durable multi-year enterprise demand for hard disk storage.
Optimistic Guidance for Q2 FY2027
Management issued robust forward guidance for the second quarter of fiscal 2027, projecting revenue of approximately $5.1 billion (plus or minus $100 million). That target would represent a 70 percent increase compared to the same period in fiscal 2026. Non-GAAP gross margin is projected to reach 60.5 percent, with non-GAAP diluted earnings per share forecasted at $5.80.
