Cohesity has announced a strategic interoperability milestone with HashiCorp, introducing the first cloud data recovery method specifically designed for Terraform Self-Managed environments. This integration enables enterprises to leverage their existing infrastructure-as-code (IaC) blueprints to accelerate disaster recovery following cyberattacks, bridging the gap between infrastructure configuration and application data restoration.
Automating Recovery Through Declared Configuration
In the wake of a security incident, organizations often face the daunting task of manually rebuilding complex cloud environments. By utilizing Cohesity Data Cloud in conjunction with Terraform Self-Managed, IT teams can now automate the recreation of their declared infrastructure state. The integration utilizes the organization’s own reviewed and approved Terraform code to define the environment’s desired configuration, ensuring that the restored infrastructure aligns with established security and compliance standards rather than replicating potentially compromised production states.
The Mechanics of Recovery-as-Code
The Cohesity Cloud Rebuild capability functions by mapping the application architecture directly through Terraform’s interface. The system analyzes the IaC files to identify necessary cloud resources—including networking, Kubernetes clusters, and database configurations—and determines the precise sequence for restoration. During the recovery process, the platform restores the infrastructure defined by the Terraform code and subsequently populates it with the most recent, verified application data stored within Cohesity’s backups.
A critical feature of this integration is the ability to account for timing discrepancies between infrastructure changes and data backups. The system allows administrators to select specific recovery points, clearly illustrating the time gap between the chosen code version and the associated data backup. This transparency ensures that teams have a clear understanding of the application state prior to final restoration.
Addressing Enterprise Demand for Hybrid Control
Since IBM’s acquisition of HashiCorp in early 2025, the focus on securing hybrid cloud control planes has intensified. Terraform Self-Managed remains a preferred choice for large enterprises operating in air-gapped, highly regulated, or security-sensitive environments where SaaS-based management is not feasible. By enabling these organizations to treat recovery as a code-based process, Cohesity aims to reduce the mean time to recovery (MTTR) significantly.
Tyler Lynch, Outbound CTO of Automation at IBM Software, noted that the collaboration addresses a fundamental customer requirement: the need to recover not just the environment, but the state of the infrastructure itself. By validating the interoperability between Cohesity’s data protection layer and HashiCorp’s state management, the two companies are providing a pathway for organizations to return to a trusted operational state more efficiently than manual reconfiguration would allow.
The Cloud Rebuild functionality is currently available as part of the Cohesity Data Cloud Enterprise Edition, with upgrade paths provided for existing users of Cohesity Data Protect and NetBackup.
