Synology has launched ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 (APM 2.0), introducing expanded platform coverage, cross-platform recovery, volume-level encryption, and upcoming AI-driven threat mitigation for its enterprise data protection appliances.
The new software update targets fragmented backup infrastructures to lower total costs and accelerate recovery times. Jia-Yu Liu, EVP of the Synology Data Protection Group, noted that managing disjointed environments drives up expenses while slowing down operational restoration for modern businesses.

APM 2.0 broadens platform coverage to include Amazon EC2, Azure VM, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV, and Google Workspace. Cross-platform recovery capabilities allow workloads to be backed up and restored across diverse environments, facilitating disaster recovery and workload migration. Backup destination targets now encompass ActiveProtect Vault with expanded Synology NAS support alongside Azure Blob Storage.
The updated software also adds volume-level software-based storage encryption to secure data at rest against hardware theft or loss. Furthermore, an upcoming APM 2.1 release will introduce AI and machine learning anomaly detection to monitor backup versions for mass deletions, entropy shifts, file modifications, and rate changes, automatically quarantining suspicious copies.
APM 2.1 will integrate third-party antivirus software including Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, and ESET to scan backups for malware before restoration. If malware is found in the latest backup, an Auto Fallback function will restore the most recent clean version automatically.
